The discriminant is the value that determines how many solutions and the type of solutions that a quadratic equation has. The quadratic formula is a method for solving a quadratic equation. In the quadratic formula, there is a part under the radical, which is b^2-4ac. This part of the formula is what's used to find the value of the discriminant. The first step is to put your quadratic equation into ax^2+bx+c form. Next, you identify the values of a, b, and c. Now you will substitute these values into b^2-4ac to find the discriminant. If the value is positive, there are 2 real solutions. If the value is negative, then there are 2 complex solutions. If the value is equal to 0, then there is one real solution.
